The Bali Spirit Festival

If you’re looking to go to Bali, chances are you’ve already had a thought a little about where to go and what to see. Bali island has a number of excellent beaches. Those on the Bukit Peninsula in the far south of Bali are considered some of the best for both surfing and swimming. If you’re looking to explore, head a few hours out of Denpasar to the northwest coast for black sands, clear water, rocky outcrops and green paddy fields. Bird watch in Bali Barat National Park, boat and fish in Gilimanuk Bay and dive or snorkel 5 miles offshore at Deer Island. Of course much of Bali has been spoiled by tourism over the years, but there are still many places in Bali that are relatively unaffected. It’s a must-see destination and one to tick off the bucket list for many.

Why go in March? The weather in Bali tends to be pretty good all year round thanks to it being situated around just 7 degrees south of the equator. Yes, March does see the tail end of the rainy season, but realistically you’d get no more than a few hours of rainfall a day and temperatures are warm (average 27c). Typically, you’ll get plenty of sunshine for hitting the beach or lazing by the pool. Because of the ‘threat of rain’ talked about in many a tour guide or travel forum, Bali in March can be nice and quiet – leading to cheaper accommodation, more peaceful beaches and less crowded temples.

March is a great time to visit if you’d like to experience some of the traditional Balinese festivities. Nyepi Day (Day of Silence) is the Balinese New Year and takes place annually on the 9th March. The locals participate in lively celebrations with traditional music and dancing. It is a day of raucous noise and merriment with street parades, bamboo cannons and occasional firecrackers filling the air with flames and smoke.

Nyepi Day is followed by a day of absolute silence (Saka New Year - the Bali Day of Silence). So be warned, the 10th March in Bali is pretty quiet – you’ll find shops, restaurants, and even the international airport will be closed. There is no traffic and people stay home for the day. As a tourist it’s great excuse to stay inside and sleep off the excitement of the day before!

Taking place in Ubud, Bali from 19th to 26th March 2017, is one of the world’s most inspiring celebrations of global community, world music and well-being - the Bali Spirit Festival. It is an annual festival of yoga & meditation, healing & breathework, music, dance and martial arts, with workshops taking place throughout the idyllic island of Bali. The Bali Spirit Festival is one of the world’s leading yoga/lifestyle events.
